Ceramics Syllabus Ceramics I is designed for students who are interested in art and really enjoy hands on learning! Over the course of the semester, we will go over simple hand building techniques and also learn how to throw on the wheel. Students will learn how to enhance their pieces using underglazes, overglaze and porcelain slip. All of the assignments we cover over the semester are listed below.

Semester Project All students are required to complete the Semester Project for a Semester Exam grade. Students can work on the Semester Project over the course of the semester.
Project 1 - Power Point Our first project is learning about and creating our own Mimbres Coil Pots. Please check out this Power Point for more information.
Project 1 - Mimbres Coil Pot Packet Students will learn about Native American Mimbres Cultures before using Earthenware clay and Porcelain slip to create their own Mimbres Coil Bowl with detailed design glazed into the bowl.

Project 2 - Art Nouveau Packet Students will learn about the style of Art Nouveau and how it relates to Ceramics. Students will use what they learned about Art Nouveau to create a stamp that they will use on their final piece.
Project 3 - Power Point Our third project is learning how to throw on the wheel. Please check out this Power Point for more information.
Project 3 - Wheel Throwing Packet Students will learn techniques of how to throw on the wheel. Students will create a practice piece which will be cut in half by the instructor, discussed and approved before the student will move on to create their final piece.
Project 4 - Dwellings Our fourth project is creating a dwelling (something that lives in something else). Please check out this Power Point for more information.
Project 4 - Dwellings Packet Students will learn about the pinching technique and other hand-building techniques to create a Dwelling and inhabitant (someone or something to live in their dwelling). Students will finish the piece by glazing.
Project 5 - Masks Our fifth project is creating a mask. Please check out this Power Point for more information.
Project 5 - Masks Handout Students will learn about different cultures and how they use masks. They will then create their own masks using an armature and carve in to and add on to their clay to create a unique looking mask that depicts their own personal style.
