Tips for Staying Healthy During Virtual Learning
Establish and Maintain Routines. Even though we are participating in a virtual learning environment, try to maintain your typical schedule throughout the day. Wake up, go to school, read, exercise, and go to bed at your regular times. Keeping a regular schedule provides a sense of control, predictability, calm, and well-being.
Practice Healthy Habits. Prioritize getting a healthy amount of sleep, eating well, and moving or exercising regularly. Seek news only from reliable sources, and only in short stints. Try not to become absorbed in the coverage for long periods of time, and find opportunities to appropriately disconnect.
Stay Connected. School closure will mean you are separated from people you would normally see. Make an effort to stay connected through social media, email, texting, and video calls.
Take Breaks. Take breaks to ease your mind and distract yourself when you start to worry or are feeling sad. Play a game, watch a movie, or try meditation. Accept the emotions that you and your family are experiencing. Children may be upset and disappointed about what they are missing out on. Listen and be empathetic.
Focus on the Positive. Make being at home as fun as possible. Celebrate spending time as a family. Do family projects. Have a game night. Organize belongings. Write a letter to a friend or neighbor stuck at home alone. Try a project that might help others, like sending a card to healthcare workers.
Check-in with Children about What They are Hearing. Many people are hearing misinformation online. Find out what your child already knows and start from there in terms of sharing accurate information. Limit their exposure to the news. Don’t start or end your day watching/listening to news about COVID-19
