Your child’s ability to see, hear, and communicate clearly in school will have an enormous impact on his/her ability to learn. Therefore, Mount Horeb Area School District will be conducting vision, hearing, and speech/language screenings. Students at Hearts and Hands and Little Vikings will be screened on Wednesday September 25th. Students at Agape and Children’s Community School will be screened on Thursday September 26th. If students are absent on screening day, makeups will be conducted, although we only have access to the Lion’s Club vision screening September 25th-27th.
Below outlines the areas of screening that will be conducted your child.
Vision: The Mount Horeb Lion’s Club will provide this screening aimed at identifying eyesight problems in children. The goal is to facilitate corrective measures while the child is young so that future problems will be minimized or even avoided altogether. Results of the vision screening are used to assess whether a child needs to see an eye doctor. Children who need a full eye exam are referred to an eye doctor of the parent's choice. Families in financial need are directed to local agencies. All results are kept confidential.
Hearing: District Speech and Language Pathologists will use a machine called an audiometer to play a series of tones through headphones that your child will wear. The tones vary in pitch (frequency) and loudness (intensity). Your child will signal by raising his/her hand every time a tone is heard, even if the tone is very faint. Each ear will be tested separately.
Speech/Language: If requested by you or your child’s teacher, District Speech and Language Pathologists will work with your child to determine if your child has possible delays in articulation, expressive or receptive language skills that may need additional evaluation to determine if a delay is impacting their learning. Children currently identified as having a speech and/or language disability will not be screened. Call or email Nicole Tepe or click this link by Friday, September 20th to request your child participate in the Speech/Language Screening.
At the end of the screening, your child will receive a copy of the screening results to bring home to you. The form will indicate one of the following outcomes for each area screened:
- Passed: Your child passed the vision, hearing, and/or speech/language screeners.
- Did Not Pass: Your child did not pass a vision, hearing, and/or speech/language screener. Your child may require further evaluation with a Physician, Optometrist, or Audiologist. In regards to your child’s hearing, a rescreen will be completed in 4-6 weeks if they do not pass the screening. In regards to your child’s speech/language, further assessment will be recommended through a special education referral, and your written permission will be needed for any further evaluation.
- N/A: The screening was not administered to your child.
Results will be documented in your child’s school health record and available to each parent/guardian upon request. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Nicole Tepe at 437.7692 or tepenicole@mhasd.k12.wi.us
